Each belt is a chapter. Here's what they mean and what's expected at every stage.

White Belt

White Belt

The foundation. Everything starts here.

Typical time: 0 - 2 years0 to 4 stripes

The white belt is where every practitioner begins. You learn fundamental positions, basic submissions, escapes, and mat etiquette. The most important skill at this stage is showing up consistently.

  • Survival and defense

Blue Belt

Blue Belt

You know the game. Now you develop your style.

Typical time: 2 - 4 years0 to 4 stripes

At blue belt, you have a solid understanding of the fundamentals. You start chaining techniques, developing a personal game, and become dangerous from your favorite positions.

Purple Belt

Purple Belt

The transition to mastery.

Typical time: 4 - 7 years0 to 4 stripes

Purple belt is often considered the creative belt. You have deep knowledge of positions and start experimenting with your own variations. Many purple belts become assistant instructors.

Brown Belt

Brown belt is about polishing everything. Your movements are efficient, your timing is sharp, and your game is distinctly yours. There are very few gaps in your knowledge.
